Stephen King 'Carrie'

Stephen King 'Carrie'
Audiobook | Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio; Unabridged edition | ISBN: 0743536983 | 2005 | English | MP3 CBR 192 Kbps | 572 MB
Stephen King's first published novel offers a warning to bullies in the person of Carrie White, a high school misfit who wreaks her revenge in a now-famous prom scene.
While the story is no less fresh today than it was in 1974, this audio edition promises a "brand-new introduction from the author," which is not, in fact, included in the recording. The story is narrated by Sissy Spacek, who played the title role in the movie. While Spacek perfectly understands the protagonist and amply projects both her hopes and misery, this listener found it unsettling to hear a story about Maine natives in a Maine town read in a clear Texas drawl. Spacek's consistency and acting ability somewhat make up for this incongruity, but King's "Mainiacs" still sound more performed than real.

Kremer was born in Riga to parents of German-Jewish (his father being a Holocaust survivor) and Latvian-Swedish origins.[1] He began playing the violin at the age of four, receiving instruction from his father and his grandfather, who were both professional violinists. He went on to study at the Riga School of Music and with David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1967, he won third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels; then, in 1969, second prize at the Montreal International Violin Competition (shared with Oleh Krysa) followed by first prize at the Paganini Competition in Genoa; and finally first prize again in 1970 at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
"Lovely works, and I'll never breathe a word against Vivaldi again! Both soloists are splendid in the Bach."

Angela C. Milner, David Norman - Eyewitness Guides: Dinosaur
DK Publishers | 2003 | ISBN: 0751364851 | Pages: 72 | PDF | 5.61 MB
There is so much to discover and learn about dinosaurs that it is not always easy to take it all in. Often the material is presented in a very dry or dull way. In this wonderful book we are offered a wealth of material in a form that is unique to the Eyewitness books. Not only are there illustrations and copies of prints, but a plethora of photographs are provided as well. The photographs often dominate the page, giving the reader a sense of being almost able to touch the item or animal. There are photos of modern reptiles, of replica dinosaurs, of fossils of every shape and size, of plants, of tools that "Fossil Hunters" use in the field, and of paleontologists working on dinosaur remains to discover their secrets. Every picture and photograph is labeled, and more often than not, it has an accompanying detailed annotation. Actual text is relatively short, yet the reader still receives a great deal of fascinating information about dinosaurs, their times, and how we learn about them. The authors cover both the expected basic topics, including physiology, habits, evolution, and extinction, and a few interesting subjects that are not as commonly discussed.

Seized and burned by Alexander's army, shaken by uncounted earthquakes, eroded by 25 centuries of rain, fluctuating temperatures and scouring winds, Persepolis-the greatest of the royal residences of ancient Persia-is a definitive ancient ruin.
Yet, the place remains an awesomely impressive sight 2,500 years after it was built. Even today, those who step up to its gigantic terrace of 125,000 square meters and see its majestic columns are filled with a sense of awe drifting into a dream-like trance.

A dream in which one tries to visualize the beauty and dazzling splendor of Persepolitan palaces before their sad destruction.
The film, about 40 minutes long, is available on DVD.
Achaemenid Persia occupies a very important place among the great civilizations of the ancient world. In 550 BC., Cyrus, one of those rare leaders towards whom one cannot help but gravitate, laid the foundation of the largest empire the world had ever seen. His empire was quite unique because it was built on a model of tolerance and respect for other cultures and religions.
So much so that the Old Testament regards Cyrus as the savior of the Jews from Babylonian captivity; while Xenophon, the 4th century BC Greek historian, refers to him as a man of wisdom, resilient spirit and guilelessness.

After Cyrus, Darius the Great elevated the Persian Empire to its zenith. The Empire now extended from the borders of India east to Greece on the Mediterranean, down to Egypt and Ethiopia in Africa and up to what is now Russia and Eastern Europe.
28 different nations were brought together under the rule of a man who was hailed as "the King of the Kings".
It was under his rule that for the first time a standard weighing system was devised, Old Persian cuneiform script was invented, and gold and silver coins were minted and used throughout the Empire. As an administrator and a builder, Darius was brilliant.
In Egypt, he had a canal dug between the Nile and the Red Sea, anticipating the modern Suez Canal.
In order to govern their vast empire, the Achaemenid kings established not one but four capitals cities in various strategic region: Babylon, Susa, Ecbatana and finally the most magnificent of them, Parsa or Persepolis, which was known in its day as the "richest city under the sun".
"Shokouh'e Takht'e Jamshid" is the Persian name of this documentary-animated film, COLOR-41 min.

David Shotter, "Tiberius Caesar"

David Shotter, "Tiberius Caesar"
Routledge | 1992 | ISBN: 0415076544 | 112 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB
David Shotter presents an up-to-date study of the character and life of Tiberius Caesar, heir of Augustus and Emperor of Rome from AD 14 to 37. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts of his life provide new perspectives on the major issues of Tiberius' reign: his relations with the senate, with Germanicus (his heir), with Sejanus (the prefect of the praetorian guard), as well as the reasons for his final retirement from Rome. The biography focuses mainly on Tiberius' continuous struggle to meet the demands of his role. David Shotter presents a concise and accessible study of this capable man who was, ultimately, an ineffectual ruler.

Stephen King 'Pet Sematary'
Audiobook | Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio | ISBN: 0743518446 | 2001 | English | MP3 CBR 192Kbps | 235 MB
Renowned for its superior productions, BBC radio may have outdone itself by adapting Stephen King's Pet Sematary to audio. A clamorous cacophony of talking, whining, whistling, and howling, Pet Sematary is a quick, entertaining earful for those who don't have other auditory distractions to contend with, such as a car full of talking whining, whistling, howling children.
In this BBC dramatization of King's (Wizard and Glass, Audio Reviews, LJ 2/15/98) 1983 best seller, Dr. Louis Creed moves his ideal family from congested, urban Chicago to the rural simplicity of Ludlow, ME. His property sits near a long-established pet burial ground and a mysterious Indian burial ground from which the dead can be raised. The program effectively draws us into the characters' world: marriage and family, then shock, grief and madness as we explore the nature and mystery of death. Presenting a multivoiced dramatization rather than a reading of the novel, the actors work together, with added music and sound effects, to create King's macabre world.

Christopher Gravett - DK Eyewitness Guides: Castle
DK CHILDREN | 2008 | ISBN: 0756637694 | Pages: 72 | PDF | 23.44 MB
See what life was really like for people living inside a medieval castle's mighty battlements, in this revised paperback edition
Medieval castles were incredible feats of construction designed for military efficiency. This book tells the story of how they were built and the unique features incorporated into them for added defence.
A castle was more than a building to attack and defend. It was a whole community, designed to be self-sufficient in times of siege. As well as the lord and lady, we see into the lives of other castle residents, including the squires training for knighthood, the jesters who entertained at banquets, and the many others involved in daily chores such as cooking, repairing masonry and woodwork, and making clothes.
Written by Christopher Gravett of the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London, Castle provides a fascinating fly-on-the wall look at war and peace in the medieval period.
* Superb, full-colour photographs of castles around the world, plus specially built models, offer a unique and revealing "eyewitness" view of medieval life, from a castle's construction to its destruction in a siege.
* See a medieval lavatory; a giant crossbow on wheels; how prisoners were kept secure in dungeons; a herald in full regalia; castles used by crusaders in Syria and samurai warriors in Japan.
* Learn how castles got their water during a siege, how besiegers tunnelled under castle walls; how the Normans built castles in a hurry; how the first guns worked; why round towers were better than square ones; what a castellan's job entailed
* Discover how enemies climbed castle walls; what was on the menu at a typical banquet; why many castles had resident carpenters and metalworkers; why crusader castles were so well built.

Marvel's Ultimatum Storyline Complete

Marvel's Ultimatum Storyline Complete
Eng | RS | 36 CBR + 1 CBZ | Marvel Comics | Latest Issues Released Aug 5, 2009 | 694 MB Total
Here's the Marvel Ultimatum story arc compilation, complete, given in a suggested numbered reading sequence, which you may or may not follow. Ultimatum itself is a five-issue comic book title that began publication in November, 2008 featuring multiple tie-ins and crossovers beginning with The Ultimates 3 series to the last issues of Marvel Comics' three Ultimate series, Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1 #129-133), Ultimate X-Men (#98-100) and Ultimate Fantastic Four (#58-60); the Ultimate Origins limited series; and several Ultimate series Annuals. It was introduced by the March on Ultimatum Saga #1 One Shot, published October 1, 2008. The latter is a prosaic, lengthy and very useful primer that recaps all the key events of the Ultimate Marvel Universe from the beginning, leading up to the Ultimatum event. Since it was actually in the five-issue limited series Ultimates 3 (Dec 2007-Sep 2008) where the basis for the Ultimatum event was laid, I have uploaded this limited series separately and I think they should be read first or immediately after reading the primer above-mentioned.
To refresh our memory, Ultimate Marvel is an imprint of comic books published by Marvel Comics, featuring re-imagined and updated versions of the company's most popular superhero characters, including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, the X-Men, the Avengers, Iron Man, and the Fantastic Four. The characters have new origins, freeing them from the sometimes convoluted back-histories of the original versions which were thought to turn off new readers unfamiliar with their extensive histories. The universe has been designated as "Earth-1610" within the Marvel Multiverse, which comprises an infinite number of alternate universes.
That out of the way, it was revealed at the 2009 New York Comic Con that the entire Ultimate Marvel imprint will be relaunched after the conclusion of the Ultimatum event, under a new "Ultimate Comics" brand. The four collected Ultimatum Requiem issues will be published by Marvel as a hardcover Premiere (TPB) on September 30, 2009 (October 8, 2009 cover date).

Ultimatum: Requiem Compilation

Ultimatum: Requiem Compilation
Eng | RS & Hotfile | 3 CBR + 1 CBZ | Marvel Comics | Latest Issues Released Aug 5, 2009 | 92.7 MB Total
Ultimatum: Requiem is a cross-title epilogue--and funeral services for the fallen protagonists--in the 3 main titles involved in the Ultimatum storyline, the multi-title, multi-issue cataclysmic crossover that took place in Marvel Comics' Ultimate Marvel imprint. Ultimate Marvel featured re-imagined and updated versions of the company's most popular superhero characters, particularly Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. The characters have new origins, freeing them from the sometimes convoluted back-histories of the original versions which were thought to turn off new readers unfamiliar with their extensive histories. Aside from being epilogues/funeral services to the aforementioned individual comic book titles following the conclusion of the Ultimatum Event (seen in Ultimatum #5 of 5), Requiem titles serve as transition stories to the relaunching of the entire Ultimate marvel imprint under a new "Ultimate Comics" brand. The four issues herein compiled will be collected and published as a hardcover Premiere (TPB) by Marvel on September 30, 2009 (October 8, 2009 cover date).

The Trojan War #1-4 (Of 5)
Eng | RS & Hotfile | 4 CBR | Marvel Comics | Issue #4 Released Aug 5, 2009 | 62.5 MB Total
The Trojan War is the latest in the Marvel Illustrated imprint from Marvel Comics. As with others in this line for comic adaptations of classic literature, it is told in the form of a 5-part limited series. Writer Roy Thomas, who has penned many of these adaptations, has essentially taken the collection of fragmentary tales from antiquity known as the Epic Cycle -- The CypriaThe Iliad), The Aethiopis (the days afterward, through the death of Achilles), The Little Iliad (which carries the story through the building of the great wooden horse), The Sack of Ilium (the fall and destruction of Troy) and The Returns (the homecomings, some of them tragic, of the Greek heroes) -- and along with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, faithfully attempts to create an idealized, linear graphic novelization out of the destruction of the city of Troy by Grecian armies. Issue #4 retells the events surrounding the Greek plan of the Trojan horse. (which dealt with events preceding
At last—an awe-inspiring retelling of perhaps the most famous scene from ancient Greek literature! The Trojans are unsure what to do with the wooden horse left inside their city’s walls. Some want to burn it, others to dedicate it to the goddess Athena. Then, the Greek warriors emerge from the horse and sack Troy itself! The triumphant Greek army sails away as a vengeful Athena plans to destroy them on the high seas! Thus is born the legend of—the Trojan Horse! Michael Jubien, "Possibility"

Michael Jubien, "Possibility"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2009-05-15 | ISBN: 0199232784 | 184 pages | PDF | 1 MB
Possibility offers a new analysis of the metaphysical concepts of possibility and necessity, one that does not rely on any sort of "possible worlds." The analysis proceeds from an account of the notion of a physical object and from the positing of properties and relations. It is motivated by considerations about how we actually speak of and think of objects. Michael Jubien discusses several closely related topics, including different purported varieties of possible worlds, the doctrine of "essentialism," natural kind terms and alleged examples of necessity a posteriori. The book also offers a new theory of the functioning of proper names, both actual and fictional, and the discussion of natural kind terms and necessity a posteriori depends in part on this theory.

Hope Now: The 1980 InterviewsBy Jean-Paul Sartre, Benny Levy

Hope Now: The 1980 InterviewsBy Jean-Paul Sartre, Benny Levy
University Of Chicago Press | 2007-08-15 | ISBN: 0226476316 | 142 pages | PDF | 3 MB
In March of 1980, Le Nouvel Observateur published the final interviews between the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, then blind and debilitated, and his young assistant, Benny Lévy. Readers immediately denounced the interviews as distorted and fraudulent for portraying a Sartre who had abandoned his leftist convictions, rejected his most intimate friends, and cast aside his fundamental beliefs in favor of a messianic Judaism. Sartre's supporters argued that it was his orthodox interlocutor, Lévy, who had twisted the words of the ailing philosopher.
Yet, shortly before his death, Sartre confirmed the authenticity of the interviews and their puzzling content. Here presented in translation, the interviews are framed by two provocative essays by Benny Lévy, accompanied by a comprehensive introduction from noted Sartre authority Ronald Aronson, which places the interviews in biographical and philosophical perspective to demonstrate how they confirm and contribute to Sartre's overall philosophy. This absorbing volume at last contextualizes and elucidates the final thoughts of a brilliant and influential mind.
