Eye of the Beholder is an all-time favourite. It's a real-time 3D dungeon romp at its best. You control a party of four adventurers that has to explore the sewers of your city and eradicate the evil that has infested them. The graphics in this game are superb, from the faces of your party members and NPC's to swords, potions and magical items. The monsters are also really well done and there are loads of them! There are heaps of items too, just waiting to be picked up. Westwood was known for making visually stunning introductions and they don't disappoint. The intro explains the story so far and then you're off... Creating a character is simple and straightforward. You can choose from a list of races and classes and then re-roll the statistics until you're happy. The combat in the game is also easy; you just have to right-click on the weapon and it is used. However, only your front characters can fight with swords; the back ones must use ranged weapons or magic. Magic is used by memorizing spells while resting and then choosing a spell from a list. The sound is haunting and very fitting to the environment. You can hear skeletons jingle their chains as they move, and believe me, it's unnerving. All in all, this game is worth any RPG-er's time. There is fun to be had, nerves to be shot and maps to be drawn.

To date, all the previous Gregorian DVDs have consisted of carefully constructed performances in exotic locations, so this is the first time we witness one of their renowned live shows in official recorded format. And, true to Edel's high-quality standards, the concert is brilliantly filmed for DVD in widescreen with a host of audio channels including a wonderful Dolby Digital 5.1 to the inspiring DTS surround mix. The lengthy 17-track, 80-minute show will please old and new fans alike, shot on the moody stage of one of the Prague concerts. The CD release contains two live-tracks, which are not featured on the DVD. Perhaps the only disappointment is that Losing My Religion and Still I'm Sad were not performed in this concert, however with the wealth of tracks that Gregorian now have in their repetoire this is understandable. The cover of the new album lists this as "Decade 1" for the group - so we can only look forward to even more beautiful music ahead.

While The Da Vinci Code is a great yarn, she writes, it makes numerous factual distortions and was largely inspired by another book, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, that is far from credible.
The real Priory of Sion, Newman writes, was founded in the 1950s by a French far-right extremist named Pierre Plantard, who tried to pass himself off as a descendant of Dagobert II and, therefore, as the rightful king of France. Newman writes that French historians have discredited Plantard's claims as a hoax. In The Da Vinci Code, the Priory is said to have been led by an illustrious line of grand masters, including Leonardo Da Vinci. Newman writes that Leonardo, while certainly a genius, was famously erratic, undependable, and easily distracted--far too flaky, she suggests, to be chosen to lead any group, let alone one supposedly as secret and important as the Priory. Newman says The Da Vinci Code also makes basic mistakes about Parisian geography, the layout of the Louvre museum, and important facts of French and biblical history. So did Jesus have children? Newman says there is no evidence for that either. Overall, her book is a salient reminder that fiction is sometimes just that. --Alex Roslin

Although the book is geared toward scholarly readers, it uses a limitted amount of jargon and carefully explains the background of all of the texts provided, making it accessible ot any reader with an interest in this subject. Despite the popularity of Nepal as a destination for tourists, the religions of Nepal are very poorly understood by most Westerners. This book, by presenting texts which are actually popular among modern Newar Buddhists gives an excellent feeling for how the religion is understod by the people who live and practice it. On the more scholarly side, his discussion of the "domestication" of texts and the role of stories and ritual in culture is insightful, though there is clearly room for his argument to be taken further.

Barbarian Invasion is the first expansion for the personal computer game Rome: Total War which takes the action forward to the period of the decline of the Western Roman Empire. The campaign begins in 363 A.D. and ends in 476 A.D. If the player has not achieved the campaign goals in 476, an option to quit or to continue the game is presented. The expansion includes simulation of the religious tension of the period, as three major religions (Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Paganism) fought for dominance. Also depicted are the great migrations of the Germanic and steppe peoples (notably the Huns) throughout Europe.

Rome Total War: Alexander is the second expansion for the personal computer game Rome: Total War. It is set in an earlier time period, putting the player in the role of Alexander the Great. It begins with Alexander's ascension to the Macedonian throne in 336 B.C. and lasts for 100 turns, each of which, unlike the original game and the first expansion, Barbarian Invasion, do not represent six months (assuming that it follows Alexander's actual reign of thirteen years, each turn would represent nearly seven weeks). The game is much the same as the original Rome: Total War, but with fewer factions, different units, and a different map. The player's goal is to conquer 30 provinces, including key cities such as Tyre, Halicarnassus and Babylon, within the 100 turn limit.
